A paw-some rom-com

In a delightful twist on the classic rom-com format, Milk-Bone is breaking hearts—of the Hollywood kind, that is—with their new ad campaign “Howl You Know.” Picture being charmed by Katelyn Tarver in a whirlwind romance—not with a human, but with a furry companion who teaches her the true meaning of love (and fetching). Debuting in theaters and on social media with antics straight out of a script approved by a cat lady, the campaign serves up 15- and 30-second “trailers” that cheekily nod to everything from horror flicks, where the real fright hails from a Welsh Corgi, to earnest cinematic love stories. With the tagline “DP for Dog People Content” lighting up the posters, Milk-Bone knows that when it comes to wooing the hearts of consumers, a little humor and a lot of tail-wagging action is just what the movie doctor ordered.

As a New York firm, we’re feeling the buzz of Yankees-Dodgers fever, even as Royals’ Vinnie Pasquantino’s comment reminds us that crafting a story everyone loves can be as tricky as winning a World Series. Whether fans are here for the big-market showdown or missing the underdog storyline, it’s a classic comms reminder: even the best narratives have to work hard to win everyone over.

A member of our W+W newsletter team got engaged this weekend and needs to shout it from the rooftops. To quiet her up a bit, we’ve agreed to watch “The Wedding Singer,” where Adam Sandler stars as a love-struck crooner whose heartache is almost as tragic as the ‘80s hairstyles surrounding him.
